Modern Day Diversity in my Futuristic Society

In my futuristic dystopian Earth, society is comprised of several races and ethnicities. Since people migrated and moved to the main continent to find work and provide for themselves. Ethnicity is no longer linked to geography, and people of different ethnicities live in the same areas.

Class is a term that is defined by the level of income and amount of food provisions.

Since the most educated were able to study and become food synthesizers, high income is linked to educated or well-connected people, who were able to become food distributors.

In my society, race is based on the color of one’s eyes. Those of blue eyes are most common, and people with brown eyes are considered rare, superior and more impervious to sickness and bacteria. The lines between different ethnicities are blurred, as cultures fused in a shared, underground effort to maintain a sense of humanity through the VR communities. New ethnicities are forged and cultures grow within these VR cultural incubators.

Race or ethnicities don’t usually play a role in connection to financial status or class. Since most original races were mixed during the centuries, there are no longer substantial traces of original racial differentiation. Power and income are linked more to occupation, but opportunities come from connections, knowing the right people in the right places.

Gender isn’t a term that is connected to reproduction parts anymore; it is defined by each individual for themselves and is not documented officially in any government database. One’s gender may change over the years, and it is a definition that is related more to identifying one’s sexual orientation than one’s physiology. Traditional differentiations such as clothes, bathrooms, makeup, body language are completely disconnected from one’s definition of their gender. Sexuality lives on a spectrum, between asexual (complete avoidance of sexual engagement, no physical attraction to other people) to pansexual (being physically attracted to people of all genders and sexual inclinations).

In my society, language is based on one universal language that is an evolution of Mandarin Chinese with western influences, mainly Spanish. As societies became centered around specific areas for employment purposes, language became a barrier, and Chinese and Spanish were chosen as the representatives of East and West that would be forged into a new, universal language which incorporated the tonality and versatility of Chinese with the more manageable vocabulary and limited alphabet of Spanish. Religion has no function in this new world.

Immobility is no longer an issue, as personal movers that resemble Segways are available for rent free of charge, subsidized by the government. These vehicles can move in all directions, actually giving the once disabled an advantage over people who can and choose to walk. A high metabolism is considered a severe disability, as food is so scarce, those with low metabolism can retain more of it for energy purposes and don’t have to worry about losing weight as fast. An overdeveloped sense of smell or taste is also a disability, often hindering people by not allowing them to go outside or eat food without some sort of filtering such as a breathing mask or taste-numbing pills.
