Architecture in my society

In my society, living areas are tight and packed, and apartments are built extremely high on top of existing structures, since there is no more available ground space to build on. Apartments are single roomed, with a small practical area for washing and toiletry, and the rest of it made for living. Living areas are typically not decorated or renovated. Apartments are entered from long, empty hallways, through bio-identification based locked doors. A public structure that holds special importance is the Law building, which exists in each city or its equivalent in this society. In this building, government officials are responsible for food portion distribution, as well as collecting fines and taxes. Transportation is no longer done on roads, as buildings rise so high that it became impractical to build roads that support such a system. Personal cars are an extremely rare occurrence, and people transport from place to place through communal floating carts, that transport between...

Crime and Punishment

In my society, crime is one of the most effective ways for the government to collect funds, other than taxing. Most major crimes are related to population control, as each couple is only allowed to bring one child into the world. Any additional child is required an illegal sibling, and if exposed that crime is punishable by death, both the child’s and one of the parents’. Another severe population-related crime is surrogacy, which is the second worst crime after overbreeding, and is also punishable by death. These deaths are done without trial, by government agents called “depopulators” These agents have the authority to shoot and kill upon certain identification of an illegal sibling or surrogate. The swift, trial-less method of punishment is very typical of the government’s philosophy, which puts the nation above all and plays special favors for the rich and powerful. The recruitment of depopulators is done usually through brainwashing and dehumanization of ex-parents who tried ...

Human society on Earth in the year of 2174

The ecology of my culture is a hostile, resource-exhausted environment that doesn’t allow for living outside without any form of protection. Poisonous clouds are constantly in the sky, covering the sun, and the air is too polluted to breath without a filtering device. The culture is a fully developed futuristic civilization. The food is synthetic, imitations of foods that were once naturally available. Food is genetically engineered and artificially manufactured to meet minimum nutritional requirements. It is no longer a source of recreational activities or a cultural staple; it is strictly functional and highly efficient.                  One of the most dominant trades in the civilization is a food synthesizer. These highly trained chemists are the backbone of the species’ survival, as they have the required knowledge to develop and maintain the technology required to produce food. Food can no lon...

Planet building assignment

Image
The Planet of Kareth      The planet of Kareth exists in the Sun’s solar system in an alternate universe, one of countless realities that could have unfolded as a result of the big bang and the beginning of time. In this alternate solar system, Kareth is the eighth planet from the sun, out of a total of nineteen. The atmosphere on the planet is extremely thin, and the air on it is un-breathable to humans. The planet’s surface is covered with ice, with blue frozen streams of highly sulfuric water that never thaw.            Kareth’s surface is so dense and impenetrable; the pressure from its core builds up and erupts in sulfuric geysers all over the planet. Since the temperature is so low, the liquid that erupts from these geysers immediately freezes and shoots down as ice picks that puncture the hard icy surface and leave very small holes in it. Underneath the ice, there is a layer of nutrients and small organisms t...

Hurricane Stories

Wednesday morning, it’s pouring and it’s about to get a lot worse. A hurricane is well on its way on what seems to be a direct patch to our little town. My sister arrives with her two kids and immediately falls apart crying. I make the kids breakfast and plan our journey north. It slowly becomes clear to me that she’s not in any condition to drive after such a hectic night, trying to pack and seal the house as best as she can while her husband is away for work. I put her in the car with Claire and get in the car with the kids to what is going to be a seven-hour drive with a five year old and a three year old. I’ve heard horror stories about driving with small children in the car, but nothing could prepare me for this. All they wanted to do is play. Every question, statement or action were intended to engage me or one another in some sort of play. It was hilarious. When they wanted to pretend there was a large school of fish and quite a bit of ocean in my mouth, all I had to do was kee...
